THE PROCESS

No two projects are alike. The Scholar's Desk will work with you to develop an approach suited to your needs.

We begin with a conversation about your project's content and objectives (grant acquisition, peer-reviewed publication, etc.), and your projected needs and deadlines, to determine if we're a good fit for each other. There is no fee for this initial consultation. Next, we agree on the services you wish to contract and on a fee, which we'll put in writing along with a list of deadlines. You send a 50% deposit along with an electronic and hard copy of your text or materials to secure a place on the calendar. We proceed with the work, maintaining communication as we see the project through to completion. The balance on the account is due when you receive the revised version of the text.

The process just described works best once you're confident about your project's needs (if, for instance, you need help revising a short piece such as a grant proposal or if you already have a reader's report for a draft of a book or essay). If you're not sure – and if not, you're not alone – you can begin with a Project Assessment: The Scholar's Desk reads the latest draft of your work and discusses its merits and shortcomings with you for up to an hour. For this, we agree, in writing, on a fee based on the manuscript's length and level of polish and on a deadline. The Scholar's Desk begins work once we receive payment and hard and electronic copies of the text; we have our conversation about the manuscript by the deadline. At that point you can decide whether or not to hire us for additional work and, if so, which services you would like to contract. In these cases the Project Assessment fee will be put toward the cost of the revision.

The Scholar's Desk specializes in substantive recommendations that better the odds of favorable peer review. We know what it's like from our own scholarly practice: we've been there ourselves, and on both ends of the process at that. Let us put our experience to work for you.
